For the Week of 10/29/18
What We’re Learning This Week:
Reading: “Animals Building Homes” (Non-Fiction Text)
We will focus on asking and answering questions about key details in a text. We will also review main topic. We will focus on using various text features to locate key facts or information in a text. We’ll also be continuing guided reading and daily five center activities. Please continue to read and monitor the book-in-a bag coming
home nightly.
As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.
Writing: We began a new writing unit on opinion writing. Students will learn how to write an opinion piece in which they introduce the topic or name of a book, state an opinion, supply detailed reasons for the opinion and provide a sense of closure. This week we will continue to focus on learning fact vs. opinion. We will also learn how to write good detailed reasons to defend our opinions. I will also continue to conference with students and reinforce the application of what we are learning.
Word Study/Spelling:
Beginning consonants and Blends: s, t, st (sun, set, tap, tug, step, stop)
Read and Write Fry Words: what, all, were, we, when
Phonics- Consonant Clusters s family (stick, scab, small, slid, snap, spin, swing)
Grammar: Common, proper and possessive nouns (continued)
Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10, and our goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one
minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute by the end of the year. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common
core.We will continue to focus on place value by building and writing numbers. We will also focus on story problems. We will discuss part-part-whole as well as start-change-result and write expressions to represent story problems.

For the Week of 10/22/18
What We’re Learning This Week:
Reading: “Places Plants and Animals Live” (Non-Fiction Text)
We will focus on the main idea and key details. Students will be working on
asking and answering questions to help figure out the meaning of the words
in a non-fiction text. We’ll be continuing guided reading and daily five.
As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression
practice. Please continue to read and monitor the book-in-a bag coming
home nightly.
Writing: We are beginning a new writing unit on opinion writing.
Students will write an opinion piece in which they introduce the topic
or name of a book, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion and
provide since of closure. Well will continue to work on using upper and
lower case letters in the correct manner as well as punctuation.
Word Study/Spelling: Digraphs th, wh (thumb, thin, whale, wheel)

For the Week of 10/15/18
What We’re Learning This Week:
Reading: This week we will be reading a non-fiction story, “Animal Park”. We will focus on the topic/main idea of the story, as well as key details that help describe it. We will also be reviewing non-fiction text features.
Your child will be coming home with their guided reading book to read in their “book in a bag.” Please remember to practice reading your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them. Ask them comprehension questions, such as, “Who are the characters?” and “Tell me what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of this story.”
Writing: Students will continue writing about “small moments” throughout our personal narrative writing unit. The students will be choosing one of their stories that they think is their best writing this week. Then our mini lessons will focus on how to revise and edit their writing. This will help us to publish and celebrate the students’ writing pieces. I will continue to conference with students and reinforce the application of what we are learning.
Grammar: We will continue to review capitals and end marks as we continue editing lessons in writing workshop. Remember your sentence checker (a sentence must include): capital letters, spaces, brave spelling, makes sense, and end marks! We will also continue to review adjectives as the kids learn how to revise and “fancy up” their writing.

Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. We will focus on several activities to help us become more fluent with doubles and near doubles (3+3=6, 3+2=5, 3+4=7). This week we will be doing a group worthy task… The students will work in groups to collaborate to work on skills and strategies to help solve a math riddle.

For the week of 10/8/2018
What We’re Learning This Week:
Reading: This week we will be reading the fiction story, “Get the Egg”. We work on retelling the story with pictures and sentences from the book. We will also learn how to retell a story using ‘who’ and ‘what’ strategies.

**Your child may be coming home with less guided reading books the next few weeks due to end of the quarter individual assessments.
Writing: Students will continue writing about “small moments” throughout our personal narrative writing unit. We will also work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons. The children will choose one of their best stories to focus on for revising, editing, and publishing. We will celebrate the stories by sharing them with our classmates when they are completed.
Grammar:We will begin to learn about adjectives this week. We will use adjectives to ‘fancy up’ our writing.
Word Study/Spelling:
Fry Words: **Teacher chooses 5 review words from first column: with, they, this, for, one
Short vowel word families will be our focus for this quarter. Word families share the same vowels/patterns and rhyme.

Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. We will continue working on this all year. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. We will continue to focus on ways to make ten, and extend to the next decade. For example, what goes with 6 to make 10 and what goes with 16 to make 20. We will also continue to work on building 2-digit numbers with base ten blocks.
