Planting our Grass Seeds

The students got to plant grass seeds in science.  They are excited to watch them grow over the next several weeks!  




For the week of 4/29/19

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading: The students will be reading the story, “The Dandelion Seed”. We will focus on asking and answering questions about key details in a story.  We will also work on comparing and contrasting the adventures and experiences in stories.  As always, we will be reading poetry for fluency and expression practice.

*Please continue to read your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.

Writing:  The first graders will continue their writing unit for fourth quarter, realistic fiction.  We introduced this unit by discussing story elements in realistic fiction.  Each story will include a character, place (setting), and plot (trouble) that their character gets into. By the end of this unit, the children will be expected to write a story that has two or more events, with details, transition words, and a wrap-up sentence. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.  During this unit, each child will write a made up story with characters doing realistic things and revisit his or her writing to self-assess and revise.  The children will be exploring the option of writing a series about a character. 

Word Study/Spelling:  
Fry Words:  Review of all Fry Words
Feature/Pattern of the week: Long Vowels a, i  (no formal assessment)
Grammar: Review using verbs to convey past, present, and future 
PhonicsLong i- Silent e/igh/ild
Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core.  
This week we will be working on story problems and defining and non-defining attributes of shapes.

Craddock Art Show! Tuesday, April 30th from 6 - 8pm!



A Note from Ms. Hickey:
Each child at Craddock will have their masterpiece matted, framed and displayed for families to view and purchase. Along with viewing your child's artwork, come out to Craddock and enjoy chalk art, photo opportunities, music played by Craddock's very own musicians and homemade desserts baked and sold by Harmon's Beta Club (Cash ONLY for baked goods)!
We can't wait to see everyone there and as always, thank you for your support!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading: The students will be reading the fiction story, “Frog and Toad are Friends: Spring Chapter”. We will retell the story, focusing on beginning, middle, end, as well as including key details. The students will compare and contrast the characters, Frog and Toad, in the story. We will also discuss our favorite part and character in the story, using details to support our answer. As always, we will be reading poetry for fluency and expression practice.

Fry Words:  if, go, see, may, part
Feature/Pattern of the week: short vowels (a, e, i, o, u)  
Ex: sled, ship, toss, truck, chick
Grammar:Review using verbs to convey past, present, and future
Phonics: long a (ai, ay) and silent e
Math:Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core.  This week we will be working on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with 1 digit numbers, as well as adding two 2 digit numbers.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading: The students will be reading the fiction story, “Peter’s Chair, by Ezra Jack Keats. We will describe characters, setting, and major events in a story using key details.  We will use character traits to describe Peter at the beginning and end of the story.  We will also find evidence to support our thinking.  We will also retell the story, focusing on beginning, middle, end, as well as including key details. Lastly, in their reader response journals, the children will need to identify the central message or lesson that can be learned from this story.  As always, we will be reading poetry for fluency and expression practice.

For the week of 4/8/19

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading: The students will be reading the animal fantasy story, “Mole and Baby Bird,” a story about a mole that finds and takes care of a wild bird. We will be using illustrations to demonstrate the students’ understanding of characters, setting, and plot. The students will also list character traits for Mole and Bird using evidence from the text. Lastly, in their reader response journals, the children will need to identify the central message or lesson that can be learned from this story.  As always, we will be reading poetry for fluency and expression practice.

Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core.  This week we will play “Jeopardy” to review skills we have learned (solving word problems, adding and subtracting within 20, structuring to 10, counting and writing numbers to 120, adding a 1 digit number to a 2 digit number).
