What We’re Learning This Week: Week of November 4th
Reading: “It’s Moving Day” (Fiction Text)
We
will focus on comparing and contrasting “It’s Moving Day” to “Animals Building
Homes” from last week. We will look for
key similarities and differences between the two books. We will also work on answering questions
using words like ‘why’, ‘why do you think’, ‘how’, and ‘what if’. We’ll also be continuing guided reading and
daily five center activities. Please continue to read and monitor the book-in-a
bag coming home nightly. As always,
we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.
Writing: We will continue our writing unit on
opinion writing. Students will learn how to write an opinion piece in which
they introduce the topic or name of a book, state an opinion, supply detailed
reasons for the opinion and provide a sense of closure. We will learn how to write a catchy introduction with an
opinion. We will also learn how to write
good detailed reasons to defend our opinions. I will also continue to
conference with students and reinforce the application of what we are learning.

have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts
in one minute by the end of the year. Our core lessons will include hands-on
math activities and games that support the common
core. This week we will work on part-part-whole story problems. We are also going to be introducing if two
number sentences are equal or not equal and how to prove it.

What We’re Learning This Week: Week of October 28th
Reading: “Animals Building Homes” (Non-Fiction Text)
We will focus on asking and answering questions about key details in a text. We will also review main topic. We will focus on using various text features to locate key facts or information in a text. We’ll also be continuing guided reading and daily five center activities. Please continue to read and monitor the book-in-a bag coming home nightly. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.
Writing: We began a new writing unit on opinion writing. Students will learn how to write an opinion piece in which they introduce the topic or name of a book, state an opinion, supply detailed reasons for the opinion and provide a sense of closure. This week we will continue to focus on learning fact vs. opinion. We will also learn how to write good detailed reasons to defend our opinions. I will also continue to conference with students and reinforce the application of what we are learning.

What We’re Learning This Week:
Reading: “Places Plants and Animals Live”
(Non-Fiction Text)
We will focus on the main idea and
key details. Students will be working on asking and answering questions
to help figure out the meaning of the words in a non-fiction text. We’ll be
continuing guided reading and daily five. As always, we’ll be reading
poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice. Please continue to
read and monitor the book-in-a bag coming home nightly.
Writing: We are finishing publishing and sharing our small moment stories. We are
then beginning a new writing unit on opinion
writing.
Students will write an opinion piece in which they
introduce the topic
or name of a book, state an opinion, supply a
reason for the opinion and
provide since of closure. Well will continue to
work on using upper and
lower case letters in the correct manner as well
as punctuation.

What We’re Learning This Week:
Reading: This week we will be reading the story, “Animal Park” and working on retelling the story using key details. We will discuss the main topic and identify key words.
Your child will come home with his/her guided reading book to read in their “book in a bag.” Please remember to practice reading your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them. Ask them comprehension questions, such as, “Who are the characters?” and
“Tell me what happened in this story” – beginning, middle, end.
Writing: Students will revise, edit and celebrate their “small moments” personal narrative writings. We will celebrate the stories by sharing them with our classmates when they are completed.
Grammar: We will review adjectives this week. We will work on adding these to our writing to make our stories more interesting.

What We’re Learning This Week:
Reading: This week we will be reading the story, “Get the Egg” and working on retelling the story using key details. We will use the prompts ‘who’ and ‘what’ to help us retell the story.
Your
child will come home with his/her guided reading book to read in their “book in
a bag.” Please remember to practice reading your child’s
book-in-a-bag nightly with them. Ask them comprehension questions,
such as, “Who are the characters?” and “Tell me what happened in this story” –
beginning, middle, end. **We will be doing some end of the quarter
individual assessments this week. Your
child may come home with less guided reading books than normal.
Writing:
Students will continue writing about “small moments” throughout our personal
narrative writing unit. The children
will choose one of their best stories to focus on for revising, editing, and
publishing. We will celebrate the stories by sharing them with our classmates
when they are completed.
