Math Group Worthy Task

We worked in groups to solve the 'costume party' problem.  The students did a great job working together and sharing ideas!

For the week of 10/14/19

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading:  This week we will be reading the story, “Animal Park” and working on retelling the story using key details.  We will discuss the main topic and identify key words. 

Your child will come home with his/her guided reading book to read in their “book in a bag.”  Please remember to practice reading your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them. Ask them comprehension questions, such as, “Who are the characters?” and “Tell me what happened in this story” – beginning, middle, end. 

Writing: Students will revise, edit and celebrate their “small moments” personal narrative writings.   We will celebrate the stories by sharing them with our classmates when they are completed. 

Grammar: We will review adjectives this week.  We will work on adding these to our writing to make our stories more interesting.

Word Study/Spelling: 

Read and Write Words:  come, for, or

Short vowel word families will be our focus for this quarter.  Word families share the same vowels/patterns and rhyme.

Feature/Pattern of the week: Digraphs ch, sh, 

Ex: shed, chin, shut, 

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute.  Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. We will continue to focus on ways to make ten, and extend to the next decade.  For example, what goes with 6 to make 10 and what goes with 16 to make 20.  We will also continue to work on building 2-digit numbers with base ten blocks.

Reading:  This week we will be reading the story, “Get the Egg” and working on retelling the story using key details.  We will use the prompts ‘who’ and ‘what’ to help us retell the story. 

Your child will come home with his/her guided reading book to read in their “book in a bag.”  Please remember to practice reading your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.  Ask them comprehension questions, such as, “Who are the characters?” and “Tell me what happened in this story” – beginning, middle, end.  **We will be doing some end of the quarter individual assessments this week.  Your child may come home with less guided reading books than normal.

Writing: Students will continue writing about “small moments” throughout our personal narrative writing unit.  The children will choose one of their best stories to focus on for revising, editing, and publishing. We will celebrate the stories by sharing them with our classmates when they are completed.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading:  This week we will be reading the story, “The Wind and the Sun”, and comparing it to the book “Sun”.  We will learn how to explain major differences between books that tell stories and books that give information.  We will also review retelling “The Wind and the Sun” by focusing on the characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. Students will continue to work on identifying the text features in non-fiction books.

Your child will come home with his/her guided reading book to read in their “book in a bag.”  Please remember to practice reading your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.  Ask them comprehension questions, such as, “Who are the characters?” and “Tell me what happened in this story” – beginning, middle, end

Writing: Students will continue writing about “small moments” throughout our personal narrative writing unit.  We will also work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons. The children will soon choose one of their best stories to focus on for revising, editing, and publishing.

Grammar: We will continue to review verbs this week. We will also review capitals and end marks as we learn how to edit our stories in writing workshop.

Word Study/Spelling:

Feature/Pattern of the week: short i and short u

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute.  Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. The children will continue to work on building 2-digit numbers (with base ten blocks, digit cards) and compare both numbers with <, >, and = symbols.  We will really focus on ways to make ten, and extend to the next decade.  For example, what goes with 7 to make 10 and what goes with 17 to make 20.  We will write addition and subtraction number sentences using the combinations of 10.
