Week of January 27th

What we're learning this week: 

Reading- We will read the story “Little Penguins Tale” by Audrey Wood. Students will ask and answer questions about key details in a story. They will use the pictures and details to tell about the characters, setting and events. We will work on identifying who is telling the story.

Writing: We began our new non-fiction writing unit.  We reviewed non-fiction books and discussed how they teach us about topics.  The students then brainstormed and charted their own topics that they know a lot about. Students will work on writing facts/information about a topic after learning how to plan their writing. When planning their writing, students will learn how to write an introduction, 2-3 detailed chapters, and a conclusion. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks, spelling and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.

Word Study/Spelling:
• Spelling patterns: word families  -ish, -ash, -ush, (wish, mash, rush)
• Read/Write words- have, help, next  (3^rd column)

Phonics: mixed short vowel review: a, e, o

               Comparative endings

Grammar: review adjectives

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. Students will be working on story problems with the missing number in all positions.  

3rd grading period Science and Social Studies:
Science: Living and Non-Living Things; water
Social Studies: Geography/Places and Regions

Week of January 20th

What We’re Learning This Week: 

Reading: Frog and Toad All Year: Down the Hill” and “Frog and Toad Together-in the garden”  (Fiction)
Students will compare and contrast adventures and experiences of characters in stories, as well as comparing and contrasting the two Frog and Toad stories.  We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers.   Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Students will be working on asking and answering questions about key details, and then using the key details to retell the story focusing on characters, settings, and major events in a story. We will also compare and contrast adventures and experiences of characters in stories. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers.   Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. Students will be working on understanding odd and even numbers, and adding and subtracting to 20 (using doubles, near doubles facts).  We will also work on telling time to the hour.
