For the week of 2/3/20

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading:  We will be reading the non-fiction book, “Penguins” by Anne Schreiber and comparing it with the story, “Little Penguin’s Tale” by Audrey Wood.  Students will work on retelling the stories (beginning, middle, and end) and explaining the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts.  We will discuss text features too *(heading, table of contents, bold print words, glossary).

*Please continue to read your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.

Writing:  The first graders will continue their informational writing unit.  We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.  During this unit, each child will write information books about lots of different topics and revisit his or her writing to self-assess and revise (they will name a topic, give facts, and provide a sense of closure).

Word Study/Spelling: 

Fry Words: now, one, some

Feature/Pattern of the week: short a, e, i (than, shin, check, when)

Grammar: Adjectives

Phonics: Mixed vowel review and possessives

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. This week we will continue to work on story problems with unknowns in all positions.

Week of January 27th

What we're learning this week: 

Reading- We will read the story “Little Penguins Tale” by Audrey Wood. Students will ask and answer questions about key details in a story. They will use the pictures and details to tell about the characters, setting and events. We will work on identifying who is telling the story.

Writing: We began our new non-fiction writing unit.  We reviewed non-fiction books and discussed how they teach us about topics.  The students then brainstormed and charted their own topics that they know a lot about. Students will work on writing facts/information about a topic after learning how to plan their writing. When planning their writing, students will learn how to write an introduction, 2-3 detailed chapters, and a conclusion. We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks, spelling and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.

Word Study/Spelling:
• Spelling patterns: word families  -ish, -ash, -ush, (wish, mash, rush)
• Read/Write words- have, help, next  (3^rd column)

Phonics: mixed short vowel review: a, e, o

Grammar: review adjectives

Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. Students will be working on story problems with the missing number in all positions.

Science: Living and Non-Living Things; water
Social Studies: Geography/Places and Regions

Homework: Continue with the January homework calendar. Thank you for your home support!
