For the week of 2/25/19

What We’re Learning This Week:

Reading: “Snowflake Bentley” by Jacqueline Briggs Martin
Students will be working on asking and answering key details in a story. They will identify characters, setting and major events of the story in order.   We’ll be continuing guided reading and centers. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

*Please continue to read your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them. 

Writing:  The first graders will continue their informational writing unit.  We will also be continuing to work on capitalization, end marks and writing detailed sentences through mini-lessons.  During this unit, each child will write information books about lots of different topics and revisit his or her writing to self-assess and revise (they will name a topic, give facts, and provide a sense of closure).

Word Study/Spelling:  
Fry Words: Fry Read and Write Words: Review all Fry Words
Feature/Pattern of the week: Review short vowel word families: -ish, -ash, -ush 
Ex: fish, wash, slush. 
Grammar:  Review common, proper and possessive nouns; using singular and plural nouns with matching verbs.
Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. This week we will continue to work on fact families.

Reading our Valentines

The students had so much fun passing out their Valentines to their friends and then getting to read them! 












For the week of 2/19/19

What We’re Learning This Week:

ReadingWe will be reading the non-fiction book, “Melting and Freezing” by Lisa Greathouse.  We will focus on the text features in the story (table of contents, diagrams, captions, glossary, index) and what the purpose of these features are.  We will also talk about the main idea and details of the text. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers.   Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Writing:  We are continuing our non-fiction writing unit.  We will continue to review non-fiction books and discuss how they teach us about topics. Students are working on writing facts/information about a topic. After planning their writing using a table of contents, students write an introduction, 2-3 detailed chapters, and a conclusion. We have really been focusing on adding details to really teach our readers, as well as adding text features such as labels and captions.

Phonics: Final Blends

Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies.  Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10.  Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. This week we will be focusing on fact families (3+9=12, 9+3=12, 12-3=9, 12-9=3).

Week of February 11th

What We’re Learning This Week:  

Reading: “Childhood Stories of George Washington”  (Non Fiction)
Students will be working on asking and answering questions about key details in a text.  We will also read a passage about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers.   Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.

Writing: We are continuing our non-fiction writing unit.  We will continue to review non-fiction books and discuss how they teach us about topics. Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. At the end of first grade, students will need to solve 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. We will continue to work on story problems, focusing on giving the correct number sentence with missing numbers in all positions, and then solving the number sentence.  We will also use our place value dice to record numbers, focusing on tens and ones, and even hundreds.

-Valentine’s Day parties- February 14th , student names were emailed so the kids can fill out their valentines. The kids will decorate bags in school to put their valentines in.

Place Value Dice

The students did a place value activity where they rolled a hundreds, tens, and ones dice and had to create the number.  




Health Lessons with Miss Gabrielle

Miss Grabrielle comes from the "Too Good for Drugs" program, and teaches our students how to make healthy choices for our body and mind.  She did a good listening lesson with the kids where we played "telephone".  The students did a great job remembering the word/sentence around the circle!  They also did a song called "Stop and Think" with fun moves!

For the week of 2/4/19


What We’re Learning This Week:

ReadingWe will be reading the non-fiction book, “Penguins” by Anne Schreiber and comparing it with the story, “Little Penguin’s Tale” by Audrey Wood.  Students will work on retelling the stories (beginning, middle, and end) and explaining the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts.

*Please continue to read your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.

Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. This week, we will continue to work on place value (hundreds, tens, and ones), as well as story problems with the unknown in each position.
