What We’re Learning This Week:
Reading: We will be reading the non-fiction book, “Melting and Freezing” by Lisa Greathouse. We will focus on the text features in the story (table of contents, diagrams, captions, glossary, index) and what the purpose of these features are. We will also talk about the main idea and details of the text. We’ll be continuing guided reading and Daily 5/centers. Please keep in mind, depending on the guided reading schedule each day, your child may not bring home a NEW book to read every day. As always, we’ll be reading poetry weekly for fluency and expression practice.
*Please continue to read your child’s book-in-a-bag nightly with them.
Writing: We are continuing our non-fiction writing unit. We will continue to review non-fiction books and discuss how they teach us about topics. Students are working on writing facts/information about a topic. After planning their writing using a table of contents, students write an introduction, 2-3 detailed chapters, and a conclusion. We have really been focusing on adding details to really teach our readers, as well as adding text features such as labels and captions.

Math: Our math lessons each day will include computational fluency, fact fluency, and core math instruction focused on the first grade common core math standards. Computational fluency will help the students to use the most effective and efficient strategies. Fact Fluency is working with both addition and subtraction facts within 10. Our end-of-the-year goal is to have students complete 15 addition facts in one minute and 15 subtraction facts in one minute. Our core lessons will include hands-on math activities and games that support the common core. This week we will be focusing on fact families (3+9=12, 9+3=12, 12-3=9, 12-9=3).
